What is biology?

• Biology is the scientific study of life

Â* All life i.e. plants
• It is the appreciation of:
— The structure and function of individual Organisms
— How organisms evolved
— How organism interact w/their environments
• What is the structure and function of organisms?
— The cell is the basic unit of life
— Structurally and functionally
—All living things are composed of cells
• What is evolution?
—The premise of evolution is that:
• Species change over a period of time in response to their environment
And
• All living things share characteristics because the have a common ancestry

• Started with a single cell
—single cells evolved into bigger organisms
• How did organisms evolve?
—Cells come only from preexisting cells
And
—All organisms are composed of cells
• This is called the “cell theory” by scientists

What is animal evolution?

• All animal species share common traits and are:
—multicellular
—Heterotrophic
—can’t produce their own food
—Motile
• Can move

Animals are highly diversified
Why are animals so diverse?

• Animals are diverse largely because they are adapted to various environments.
• These adaptations cause animals to solve similar problems in different ways

How do scientists contend with the large diversity of animals and other organisms?
• Scientists use a classifications scheme called taxonomy
• Taxonomy is the branch of biology concerned with:
—Identifying
—Naming
—And classifying organisms

• What are the categories of taxonomy?
—Domain-most inclusive (everything)
—Kingdom
—Phylum
—Class
—Order
—Family
—Genus
—Species
