On a bus trip this weekend, our band director (who is the coolest band director ever) decided we should pass the time by watching a videotape of a few episodes of Earthworm Jim. For those of you who don't know, Earthworm Jim was a mid-90's television show inspired by a wacky videogame. I used to watch it and Freakazoid with my brothers on the Saturday mornings I was home.

It was as funny as I had remembered it being. Wacky characters like Professor Monkey-for-a-Head, Evil the Cat, and Princess Whatshername, weird Planets like Heck and the planet of easily-frightened-people, random plot devices like finding an ancient sword in a vending-machine sandwich--how could it not be funny? But best of all were the things I just hadn't noticed when I watched it before. Like Peter Puppy muttering the litany against fear. (Thinking about it, that really must have been an episode I hadn't seen before, because I know the show didn't air until after I had read Dune. But that's not the point.)

Hmm, actually, I don't know what my point was. Go anywhere, people. Delight in the ridiculous insanity that was Earthworm Jim. Reminisce about TV shows of your youth. I just felt like sharing one of the best parts of my weekend.

I remember Earthworm Jim being on TV---but by the time it was on, I had stopped (for the most part) watching cartoons (I think I was working by then).

Let's see:

In the 80s: Thundercats, Sheira-Warrior Princess, He-man, My Little Ponies, Smurfs, Snorkels, Johnny Quest, The Golden Lance, Fat Albert and The Backyard (?) Gang, Scooby-Doo. My personal Favorite--Hello Kitty's Theater.

In the 90s--Nickelodeon's Fairy Tales, Doug, Monsters, Rugrats, Batman, Aeon Flux (though I was always really confused), MTV's Oddities (both the Head, and Maxx--I liked the Head better), Animaniacs, Tiny Toons.

All through the ages: Looney Toons.

I can't remember any more---though I know there was a lot more.

Later in teenagedom--I tried watching Pokemon and Digimon and got really confused.

hmmm...let's see. Tale Spin, Rescue Rangers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Gummi Bears were my favorite cartoons ever. I think that was before we moved to Arkansas. I rememer after that having a distinct change to the Nick cartoons: Rugrats, Doug, even Ren and Stimpy and Rocko's modern life (though I didn't really like them as much).

Rocko's Modern Life! Aaahhh! R-e-c-y-c-l-e recycle c-o-n-s-e-r-v-e conserve! Don't you p-o-l-l-u-t-e pollute the rivers, sky, and sea or else you're gonna get what you deserve!

I'm nauseous. I'm nauseous. I'm nauseous.

Earthworm Jim as I remember was a funny show, but I don't remember too many episodes. Evil the Cat though was a work of genius, my friends, GENIUS!

Freakazoid I remember watching a ton of times. Great show. Absolutely pointless and funny. Like the bit about CandleStick Jack.

The Tick, though, reigns supreme. 'Nuff said.

But lets go ahead and list my cartoon shows throughout my life....

Early Toddler Years: Hello Kitty, Rainbow Brite, She-ra.

Ya... know you know why I am the way I am today.

Next phase: Transformers, He-man, Carebears, Popples, Thundercats, and TMNT

Then...: TMNT again, The Tick, Freakazoid, Rocko's Modern Life (love it... Heffer cracked me up) AHHHHHH Real Monsters! Simpsons

Just for the record, I watched Sam and Max, but not regularly. Funny, but didn't catch my attention for some reason.

Then....: Angry Beavers, Dexters Lab, Invader Zim, Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy etc. etc.

I feel so deprived! All I ever watched was Sesame Street, Reading Rainbow, Mister Rodgers, Barney and Lamb Chops...

I forgot about AHHHHHH Real Monsters! That show rocked.

I'm also a fan of Tiny Toons and Loony Toons. I owe my outlook on life to the philosophy behind those shows. :D

I loved real monsters.

I also remembered a couple of other gems today: Punky Brewster (the cartoon and the TV series) and Teen Wolf (the movie and the cartoon series).

Funny.............

When I'm grey and creaking I'm going to take comfort in the fact that you're only "slightly younger."

Punky Brewster did have a cartoon series :D

and...That show rocked. Anyone remember Sam & Max, Freelance Police?

Jon Boy---I do remember Sam & Max---hilarious. I had a job at the time it was on the air, but one friday afternoon when I was 17 it was on and I laughed my ass off. I was also a bit horrified that they actually had some of that stuff in there ("oh, well, that went the way of the National Endownment for the Arts")

Then it went off the air. :(
